Technical Translation
Technical translations, like the sciences that they are the subject of, must above all things be totally clear, concise and completely accurate because in the field of technical translation there is no middle ground; either the translation is well rendered…or it is not!
As with any subject, a clear rendition depends upon a thorough knowledge of, and experience with that subject; so preferably, a technical translator should have some experience of working within the technical field that he is undertaking a translation of, but even more desirably, a technical translator should hold a relevant qualification in his specialist field of technical translation.
There is another, often little understood aspect of technical translation that can often have a dramatic effect on translation quality…and that is vocabulary. In general terms the two primary languages of technical translations tend to be English and German; because of this, both languages have built up modern vocabularies to comprehensively encompass all aspects of technical theory and description. Many other languages (even some European languages) do not possess such an all encompassing corpus within their languages.
Because of this potential stumbling block to precise translations, it is highly desirable that a technical translator is a native language speaker of the language that he is translating into, in order to produce a precise localised translation that will accurately convey even the most complex of terms and ideas even where the local language may not possess direct equivalents.
